Mount Monserrate Bogota Tour

Monserrate Bogota: Your Must-See Guide to this Iconic Hill

If you’re visiting Bogota, Monserrate is likely already on your list and for good reason! This iconic landmark offers breathtaking views, a touch of history, and some unique experiences that make it a must-visit spot in Colombia’s capital. Here, we’ll share tips to make your visit unforgettable, straight from locals who know the ins and outs of Monserrate.

Best Time to Visit Monserrate

Early mornings are the sweet spot. Arriving between 8:00 and 9:00 AM lets you skip the long lines and enjoy a peaceful climb or ride to the top. Keep in mind that weekends and holidays tend to be crowded, so if your schedule allows, plan your visit on a weekday for a more enjoyable experience. If you only have the weekends to visit it is recommended to buy the Fast Pass. Yes, it is more expensive, but you will be thankful you got it!

Pro Tips:

  1. Monserrate is a great place to see hummingbirds, especially at the hummingbirds trail. If you enjoy birdwatching, arrive between 6:00 and 7:00 AM.
  2. Bogota’s altitude means the sun can feel intense even if the weather seems cool. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and stay hydrated!

Opening hours for Monserrate:

  • Open Mon-Sat 6:30 AM – 11 PM. Tickets sold until 10 PM.
  • Sun & Holidays 6:30 AM – 6 PM. Tickets sold until 5 PM.
  • Hikers can buy tickets to descend at the ticket booth at the top from 5:30 AM.

How to Get to Monserrate

Arrive to the main ticket area at the base of the hill and once there, there are three main ways to reach the top:

  • Funicular: A small train that runs up and down the mountain. The ride lasts about 5 minutes and is more comfortable than the cable car.
  • Cable Car: A cubicle hanging 270mts (886 feet) above ground, with a journey no longer than 5 minutes and a panoramic view of the city.

Both, the cable car and funicular offer a scenic view of the city as you ascend or descend.

  • Hiking Path: A challenging yet rewarding trek that’s popular with locals and visitors alike. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to hike, aim to start early for cooler weather.

What to Do at the Top

  • Panoramic Views: Monserrate offers one of the best view points to experience how massive the city of Bogota is. You’ll truly appreciate its vastness from up here.
  • The Church of the Fallen Lord: A place of pilgrimage for many, this historic church houses the famous statue of the “Fallen Jesus,” where visitors often come to pray for miracles, especially related to health.
  • Birdwatching Trail: If you’re an early riser, consider the birdwatching path, where you can spot a variety of species native to Bogota and Colombia.
  • Souvenir Alley: Browse through stalls offering crafts, ponchos, “mochilas” (traditional woven bags), coffee, and even coca tea. This tea is made with coca leaves, honey, and lemon, it is not only tasty but also helps with altitude sickness.
  • Eat: From stalls serving traditional food or local snacks to restaurants where you can have a proper meal, there is plenty to eat. As locals our favorite spot is Santa Clara Café, perfect to try the famous Onces Santafereñas: Hot Chocolate with cheese and Tamal.

Tips for a Smooth Visit

  1. Avoid Pricey Taxis: When leaving Monserrate, skip the taxis waiting near the entrance. Use an app like Uber or Cabify for fair pricing or arrange your ride beforehand.
  2. Weather Preparedness: Layers are your best friend in Bogota. Mornings can be chilly, while midday can get surprisingly warm. Always carry an umbrella or a jacket, you never know when it will rain.
  3. Arrive Early: We can’t stress this enough! Early arrival means fewer crowds and a better experience overall.
